Course Overview

🗓 Day 1 — Saturday, May 2nd | 10:00 AM @ Void Studios

We’ll kick things off right: coffee brewing, music on low, cameras out, awkward first smiles. Then we dive in — by the end of this weekend, those shy half-grins turn into “hell yeah, look at this shot” high-fives.

🔍 Morning session: Know your gear inside out

  • We’ll start by breaking down your camera, piece by piece:
  • Aperture, shutter speed, ISO (the classic AESI triangle) — what each does, how they work together, why sometimes you want motion blur or razor-thin depth of field.
  • How to choose the right lens — prime vs zoom, focal lengths, and how each subtly changes your photo’s story.
  • Focus modes, metering, little camera buttons most people ignore (but that can save your shot).
  • We’ll look at plenty of examples, do live demos, and answer every question — including the ones you’ve been embarrassed to ask. (Hint: no question is ever dumb here.)

🥪 1:00 PM — Lunch break

Grab a sandwich from the food trucks or the local taquería. Or bring your own and hang in the studio — it’s a good chance to talk about what you love shooting, swap gear war stories, and start feeling like a crew.

🌞 Afternoon session: Natural light magic

  • We’ll head outside (Denver sun permitting) and show you how to see light like a photographer:
  • Use scrims and diffusers to tame harsh midday light.
  • Master reflectors to bounce just the right glow onto a face.
  • Try out subtle on-camera flash outdoors to lift shadows without it looking fake.
  • We’ll wander nearby, find interesting backdrops, practice directing people (yes, even if they’re just your fellow students), and help you get photos that look real, relaxed, and not like stiff yearbook poses.
  • We’ll wrap by late afternoon, give you a mini homework challenge (just for fun), and send you off to rest up for Sunday.

🗓 Day 2 — Sunday, May 3rd | 11:00 AM @ Void Studios

We start later so you can sleep in — or sift through all those shots you couldn’t wait to peek at.

🔍 Late morning: Review & gentle critique

We’ll look at a few of your favorites (or your flops — we learn just as much from those), offer quick pointers, and celebrate the little breakthroughs that happen when you finally nail exposure or get that soft background you always wanted.

💡 Midday: Into the studio — light like a pro

  • Now it’s time for the controlled chaos of studio photography.
  • We’ll spend 4–5 hours exploring:
  • Continuous lights vs strobes: what each does and why you might pick one over the other.
  • A simple 1-light setup you can actually replicate at home — perfect for portraits and headshots.
  • How to build a mood with light, use basic modifiers, and keep people looking natural (even under a giant softbox).
  • Intro to posing: tiny tweaks to shoulders, hands, posture that make a huge difference.
  • We’ll tether your camera to the big screen so you can see shots instantly — it’s a killer way to learn, spot little issues, and make adjustments on the fly.

🥗 Lunch break

Another chance to grab food nearby or relax in the studio. Honestly, some of the best learning happens in these casual in-between moments.

🖥 Afternoon: Retouching & finishing your images

  • We’ll close out the weekend with an intro to editing and retouching, right in Capture One and Photoshop.
  • Adjust exposure & color so your shots pop without looking overcooked.
  • Clean up little distractions (blemishes, lint, random photobombers).
  • Learn how subtle skin smoothing works so it still looks human.

🎯 Who’s this for?

  • Total beginners who’ve never dared touch manual mode.
  • Hobbyists who want to finally understand how to get consistent results.
  • Anyone craving the confidence to walk into any lighting situation — sun, clouds, studio — and know exactly what to do.
