How to Prepare for a Headshot Session (Without Overthinking It)
Let’s be honest — no one wakes up thinking “Yes! I get to have my picture taken today!”
Most people book a headshot session because they need to. Not because it sounds fun.
Whether it’s for LinkedIn, your website, speaking gigs, auditions, or just finally updating that 10-year-old photo — the truth is, a great headshot does matter.
It’s your first impression. Sometimes your only impression. So yeah, it should actually look like you — but better.
That doesn’t mean you need to panic-Google “what to wear for headshots” or practice your smile in the mirror. This isn’t a DMV photo. And if we’re working together, I’ve got you.
Here’s how to get ready (without spiraling into wardrobe stress or performance anxiety):
1. Don’t Overthink the Wardrobe
Stick with clothes that feel good on you — fit well, move with your body, and don’t scream for attention. Neutrals work best, but a rich color that complements your skin tone can pop beautifully. Bring options: a few tops, layers, or jackets.
Avoid logos, loud prints, or anything you’d hesitate to wear to an important meeting. This isn’t fashion week — but if you want to bring fashion energy, I’m here for it.
Quick tips:
- Solid colors > busy patterns
- Layers photograph well (think blazer, jacket, cardigan)
- Fit matters more than trend
- No neon. Ever. Not even ironically.
2. Get Some Rest (Yes, Really)
You don’t need a juice cleanse or 14-step skincare routine the night before.
But try not to schedule your session the morning after a wild night out, either.
A little rest, some water, and a clean face go a long way. If you’re booking a professional hair/makeup artist, great. If not — show up clean, moisturized, and looking like yourself on a good day. We’ll elevate the rest with lighting and angles.
3. You Don’t Need to “Know Your Angles” — That’s My Job
Seriously. You do not have to practice poses, channel your inner model, or figure out what to do with your hands (although we will joke about that).
I'll guide you through every part of the shoot — from how to stand to when to breathe. You just have to show up. The rest? Handled.
4. This Is a Collaboration, Not a Performance
Think of it like a conversation — not a performance. We'll talk, I'll adjust lighting, you’ll relax into it, and suddenly… there you are, looking like the sharp, confident version of yourself you actually are.
If you want something more creative or editorial — tell me. If you want to keep it classic and clean — also fine. I’ve worked with CEOs, actors, real estate agents, authors, and entrepreneurs. No one gets the same formula. That’s the point.
5. You’ll Leave With More Than “Just a Headshot”
When we’re done, you’ll have images you actually like. Not just tolerate.
You’ll walk away with portraits that feel elevated but authentic — something that says “this is me,” but also “yes, I hired a professional and it shows.”
If that sounds like a vibe, we’ll get along just fine.
