How to Prepare for a Senior Portrait Session (On-Location or In-Studio)
Senior year is a milestone. Not just for graduates — but for parents, too. And while the diploma is the official symbol of achievement, the senior portrait is what lives on walls, in frames, and in memories for decades.
At JJ Constantine Photography, we believe senior portraits should feel intentional, stylish, and real — not stiff, outdated, or one-size-fits-all. Whether you're planning an editorial-style session in-studio or a relaxed outdoor shoot at golden hour, here's how to make the most of your session.
1. Choose the Vibe — Not Just the Location
Senior sessions can take place in our luxury studio or out in the wild: Denver’s urban backdrops, scenic parks, cool alleys, or custom spots that match your energy. We’ll talk about whether you’re going for:
Bold & Studio-Cinematic: Think fashion lighting, clean backdrops, and full creative direction in a controlled, weather-proof environment.
Natural & On-Location: Golden hour light, flowing hair, and real-world movement — ideal for seniors who want a laid-back but editorial feel.
Hybrid Session: Best of both worlds. Start in the studio, end outdoors for variety.
We’ll help you decide what fits your personality best — and you can always change your mind after our pre-session call.
2. Wardrobe Strategy: More Than Just “Nice Clothes”
Bring 2–4 outfits with different moods. Here’s a breakdown that always works:
Classic Look: A well-fitted button-down, blouse, or simple dress — timeless and perfect for prints and gifts.
Trendy/Fashion: Something that shows off your personal style — leather jacket, flare jeans, crop top, boots, etc.
Sporty or Hobby-Driven: Sports jersey, instrument, sketchbook — anything meaningful that tells your story.
Cap & Gown (Optional): We can shoot a few stylized grad photos if desired, but it’s not mandatory.
Avoid: Neon colors, heavy patterns, and logos. These distract from you — and age poorly in photos.
3. Grooming & Self-Care Before the Shoot
- Hair: Schedule cuts or color touch-ups at least 4–5 days in advance — not the day before.
- Makeup: If you’re doing your own, aim for a matte finish and avoid SPF-heavy products (they reflect light). We also offer professional makeup and light hair styling if you want that magazine-ready polish.
- Nails: Keep them clean and simple. They will show in close-up shots.
4. What to Bring
- A small mirror or compact for touch-ups
- Lip balm and hairbrush
- Props that matter (sports gear, books, instruments, etc.)
- A parent or friend for moral support — totally welcome!
5. Trust the Process: You Don’t Need to Pose Like a Model
Every pose, angle, and expression is guided. You just show up as yourself — we'll take care of the rest. Our sessions are conversational, not robotic. If you’re awkward in front of the camera (like most people), you’ll forget all about that five minutes in.
6. After the Session: Proofs, Prints & Custom Artwork
About 5–10 days after the shoot, you’ll receive a private online gallery or in-person reveal to view your images. From there, you can order:
Custom print packages for family
Senior albums and portfolios
High-res digital files
Wall art or grad announcements
FAQs
Q: How long is the session?
Studio sessions are typically 45–60 minutes. On-location sessions range from 1–1.5 hours depending on travel and light.
Q: What’s included in the session fee?
Every session includes consultation, shooting time, editing, and your image reveal. Prints and digitals are purchased separately, so you only invest in what you love.
Q: Can I bring a pet?
Yes. If your dog or pet is part of your story, they’re welcome — just let us know in advance.
Closing Thought:
Your senior year deserves more than a cookie-cutter photo. Whether you want something fashion-forward, soulful, or playful, we’ll design a shoot that captures your personality, your style, and your story — in a way you’ll be proud of for years.
